Sports clubs to benefit from $1.9 million upgrade to St Lukes Oval in Concord

St Lukes Oval - nestled within the City of Canada Bay’s largest sporting precinct - is set to receive a $1.9 million upgrade benefitting a number of sports clubs including Briars Cricket, Concord Giants, Canada Bay Cannons and Inner West Little Athletics.

City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas advised “we are committed to providing our community with world-class facilities and open spaces. This project at St Lukes Oval will revitalise a well-used community space and provide high quality recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.”

The $1.9 million project will be completed in two stages:

  • Stage 1: Works include widening the oval, new irrigation, sportsfield drainage, installation of a new cricket wicket, relevelling the playing surface and returfing the field.

  • Stage 2: Works will include construction of new player shelters, a new barbecue area, installation of a long jump pit and run up track.

The project is funded by the City of Canada Bay, the NSW Government - through its Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund – and AFL NSW/ACT. Works are scheduled to be complete in early 2022.

New images have also been released of the $75 million redevelopment of Concord Oval, which is due for completion in February 2022.

Set to be the new home for the NRL's Wests Tigers and the site of the Wests Tigers Centre of Excellence at Concord Oval, the redeveloped venue will include a player wellness hub including education and welfare offices, integrated learning spaces, classrooms and lecture facilities, administration offices, meeting rooms and media studio, merchandise store and a museum.

It will also feature a recreation centre with health and fitness facilities and multipurpose indoor sports courts for community use.

Construction of the Centre of Excellence is well advanced, while the playing surface was removed last week and transported offsite, with work to remove the old irrigation system underway, before the surface is shaped to form a new profile, with Renworx undertaking the field work.

With the venue to continue hosting matches, the new facility will include grandstand seating and match day facilities including change rooms, coaches boxes, public plaza, landscaping, cafe, community rooms and amenities.
