Sport Group backs new World Athletics brand

With world athletics governing body the IAAF having been rolling out its World Athletics brand since the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Qatar, global surfacing specialists the Sport Group have backed the change.

Known as the International Association of Athletics Federations since its foundation prior to the Stockholm Olympics of 1912, the name of World Athletics was chosen to be more easily understood outside of athletics, with the new brand giving the organisation a broader positioning as part of its modernisation.

Linked to the rebranding, there is now a process to change track certifications, with World Athletics modifying all their documents including new certification badges. Therefore, IAAF Class 1 and 2 tracks will now be certified as World Athletics Class 1 or 2.

With 25% of all World Athletic certificated tracks coming from the Sport Group, the sport surfacing and track leader is also updating its materials.

In a communication to stakeholders it advised “Sport Group’s brands, Polytan, APT and AstroTurf, together with our network of agents lay more than 2 million metre² of track annually so we wanted to help communicate the name change.”

The communication adds “it will take time to get used to the new name. The IAAF name has been around for over 100 years and Rekortan, our global track brand, has been around 50 years so they have run many races together.”

The world’s largest business dedicated to sporting surfaces, the Sport Group sells and installs more synthetic turf sport fields, athletic tracks and courts globally than any other business.

Its companies include Polytan, AstroTurf, Melos and APT and market leading product brands such as LigaTurf, Poligras, RootZone, Rekortan, Spurtan, Laykold and Synlawn.
