Six die in China amusement park accident
An accident on a space-themed ride at an amusement park in Shenzen, south China has killed six people and injured 10.
The accident occurred on the Space Journey ride at OCT East theme park on Tuesday afternoon, a statement from the city government in Shenzhen said.
The statement said the cause was being investigated.
The ride elevates and spins 11 cabins, each carrying four passengers, Hong Kong's Ming Pao Daily News reported on Wednesday.
The newspaper quoted witnesses as saying one cabin came loose during a high-speed spin and struck other cabins. Some fell 15 metres, sending passengers tumbling.
The booming southern city of Shenzhen is a one-hour drive north of Hong Kong.
Survivors quoted by the official Xinhua news agency said there had been a burning smell and "a bang". One park-goer was quoted as saying "we managed to open the door to escape before firefighters arrived to rescue others."
Another told the agency, "I heard a bang and then lost consciousness."
