Sink or Swim program hits the road to teach students water safety
Life Saving Victoria education instructors are visiting schools in regional Victoria this week to teach students about water safety as part of the Sink or Swim program.
Delivered free of charge, the program was developed in 2012 in direct response to the issue of child drowning and the need for inland water safety education.
Life Saving Victoria Community Education Services Coordinator Melissa Laird said it’s important students are aware and prepared for a range of aquatic environments, particularly open water settings including rivers, lakes, dams and creeks.
Laird explains “as we head into summer, there is no better time for Victorian children to learn how to be safe on our beaches, rivers, lakes, dams and other waterways.
“Sink or Swim focuses on teaching students to make safe choices in aquatic environments as well as informing them about varying waterways in order to reduce the drowning rate in their local area.”
The instructors will be visiting the following schools: Merrivale Primary School, Warrnambool Primary School, Warrnambool East Primary School, Colac West Primary School and Torquay Kindergarten.
