Shire of Denmark survey reveals opposition to new swimming pool plan

The Shire of Denmark is likely to rethink plans to construct new aquatic facilities after more than 60% of respondents to a survey opposed the plan.

The 2015 Aquatic Facility Survey set out to engage with the community regarding plans for a program pool and learn-to-swim Facility at Denmark's McLean Park Recreation Centre.

The new facility was proposed as a scaled back version of a larger, more expensive aquatic centre proposal, which the community also voted down because the cost would have increased council rates.

1,733 local residents, about 23% of those eligible, responded to the survey with 675 respondents backing the plan and 1,058 opposing it.

Commenting on the results, Shire Chief Executive Dale Stewart said the community's feelings on the issue were clear.

Stewart told the ABC "we've asked the community do they want a big pool or do they want a small pool and are they prepared to pay for either?.

"The answer has been no for both of those questions.

"So really it's back to council to determine on how to proceed and or how they might reconsider the matter in time."

The Shire of Denmark is in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about 55 kilometres west of Albany and about 420 kilometres south of Perth.
