SGL completes guidance on sustainable management of community recreation facilities for LGASA

SGL Consulting Group has recently completed a project with the Local Government Association of South Australia (LGASA) to prepare Guidelines for the Sustainable Management of Community Recreation Facilities.

The project aim was to research and develop specific guidelines, models, standards and templates to assist Councils and community groups to manage local and regional recreation and sport facilities.

As a result, the Guidelines for the Sustainable Management of Community Recreation Facilities provides a resource that councils can use to ensure community clubs are viable, able to manage their facilities effectively, encouraging maximum community participation and provide a safe and healthy sport and social environment.

Accordingly, this project has produced a set of Guidelines, to provide assistance to Local Governments to sustainably manage their community recreation facilities. The Guidelines will benefit local governments by:

• Creating a more financially sustainable environment in the provision and management of sport and recreation facilities

• Encouraging sustainable approaches to management of community facilities across Local Government.

• Assisting Councils to establish best practice management for new and/or existing facilities.

• Supporting asset planning and provide management solutions to cater for the changing demands and future trends in facility management.

• Encouraging sustainable growth of sporting clubs.

• Identifying leasing/licence/hire arrangements that support sustainable club development and an equitable approach for sporting clubs facility users to ensure activities with lower participation rates or lower funding availability are supported.

• Identifying management models that will support the development of community sporting hubs.

The final version of the Guidelines for the Sustainable Management of Community Recreation Facilities and the Fact Sheets have been published on the LGASA website.
