Second catastrophic weather event impacts Aussie Ark sanctuary in just weeks

Aussie Ark sanctuary is seeking help and support from the public again following it being impacted by the second catastrophe in just weeks. The sanctuary has been hammered by the ‘cyclone bomb’ sweeping across New South Wales.

After only just starting to rebuild from the devastating May floods, the team is now facing fresh destruction as torrential rain, cyclonic winds, and unpredictable snowfall leave the sanctuary battered once again.

15 massive trees came down across the property, ripping through fences, blocking access tracks, and causing widespread damage. Power is out across key facilities, and the team is battling treacherous conditions to protect the wildlife in their care.

Tim Faulkner, Managing Director of Aussie Ark exclaimed “Honestly… does it ever end? We’ve only just begun to recover from the last disaster, and now we’re picking up the pieces all over again. This is another catastrophic event, and we’ll manage … but please do spare a thought for all the wildlife out there battling these conditions! Our concern is for the welfare of the devils; they have presented no risk to anyone or anything otherwise.”

The snowfall, not forecast on any radar, arrived as the team was bracing for 300mm of rain and destructive winds. What looked like a winter wonderland quickly turned dangerous, as heavy snow and fierce winds brought down trees already weakened by months of storms. With floodwaters cutting off access, Rangers are working with a skeleton crew - isolated, exhausted, but determined.

Despite it all, the team remains on high alert: mending fences, tending to the animals, and doing everything possible to keep the sanctuary secure. Their commitment to native wildlife conservation is unwavering, no matter what Mother Nature throws their way.

Out of hundreds of animals on site, only two Tasmanian Devils are currently unaccounted for, almost certainly sheltering safely in their dens. However, while conditions remain hazardous, a full stocktake will be completed as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, Aussie Ark asks the public to stay vigilant and report any devil sightings immediately by emailing admin@aussieark.org.au or calling (02) 4326 5333.

The most meaningful contribution the public can make, other than well wishes, is a donation so Aussie Ark can rebuild once again and get on with delivering conservation. Help Aussie Ark protect our wildlife and restore the sanctuary - visit www.aussieark.org.au and DONATE TODAY.
