Aussie Ark launches recovery efforts following catastrophic flooding
Over the past week, relentless rainfall and catastrophic floods caused severe damage to the Barrington Tops Wildlife Sanctuary. With the worst of the floodwaters now receding, the Aussie Ark team is hard at work rebuilding critical infrastructure and restoring animal habitats.
The Sanctuary experienced over 500mm of rain in just four days, causing the normally calm Hunter River to transform into a raging torrent. The floodwaters submerged enclosures, washed out access roads, and destroyed essential fencing. Despite the damage, Aussie Ark’s dedicated team acted quickly, relocating endangered wildlife to higher ground and ensuring the safety of all animals in their care.
Tim Faulkner, Managing Director of Aussie Ark noted “we’ve faced a monumental challenge, but our team’s commitment to these animals has been unwavering. We’re determined to rebuild stronger than ever, and the outpouring of support from our partners and the community is making all the difference in our recovery efforts.”
Aussie Ark is deeply grateful for the engagement by and support from the community, partners, and emergency responders during this difficult time. The Australian Reptile Park has provided boots on the ground, sending a dedicated team to assist in the restoration efforts. Key partners like Re:wild and WildArk have also generously contributed to the rebuilding process, ensuring the Sanctuary has the resources it needs to recover and continue its vital work.
Among the species relocated to safety were Tasmanian Devils, Eastern Quolls, and the famous hand-raised Potoroo, Dandarah. These animals were moved to the sanctuary’s newly constructed Vet Block, which became a temporary crisis centre. Emergency food drops were also coordinated to ensure the animals continued to receive nourishment despite disrupted supply chains.
The recovery process is ongoing, with the team already making significant strides in repairing fences, restoring enclosures, and replacing bedding for the animals. While the immediate response has been successful, the full recovery will take months, and the Sanctuary’s infrastructure will need to be rebuilt to withstand future weather events.
Faulkner added “we’re seeing real progress, but the road ahead is long. With continued support, we’ll ensure Aussie Ark remains a safe haven for our endangered wildlife for years to come.”
Aussie Ark launched a Flood Recovery Appeal last week to support the rebuilding and restoration efforts. Donations are being accepted through the Sanctuary’s official website. To donate and support Aussie Ark’s recovery efforts, visit: https://bit.ly/FloodRebuild
