Screen industry converges on Melbourne

Fundamental shifts occurring in the international cinema market are being discussed at the Screen Forever Conference, being held from today until Thursday at Melbourne's Crown Conference Complex.

Officially welcoming Australian and international delegates today, Victorian Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher said the conference, organised by Screen Producers Australia, is this country's most significant screen industry conference.

Minister Asher stated "with digital technologies and the rise of online viewing having a profound impact on the international screen industry, this conference provides an outstanding opportunity for the Australian industry to join leading international experts to examine these challenges as well as the opportunities that these market changes create."

Over the three days, delegates are attending professional development sessions, listening to keynote addresses and showcasing their diverse talents and slates of projects.

Minister Asher added that "the screen industry is a significant contributor to our economy. Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that Victoria is home to a quarter of Australia's film and television businesses with an estimated combined income of $1.46 billion.

"Since December 2010, ... Film Victoria, has supported over 110 film and television projects that are expected to generate more than $450 million in production expenditure in Victoria.

"(And) earlier this year, I announced that work was completed on Stage 5 of the workshop at Docklands Studios Melbourne. These works are part of a $10 million commitment to upgrade the Studios and position them to be a more flexible and valuable asset for domestic and international film and television production."

Film Victoria Chief Executive Jenni Tosi congratulated Screen Producers Australia Executive Director Matthew Deaner and the conference team for curating such a diverse and compelling program.

Tosi stated "from inspiring keynote speakers, Meet the Buyer sessions, Masterclasses and Roundtable Briefings to the International Partnership Market, the Games Forever Market and plenty of networking opportunities, Australian screen practitioners are being spoilt for choice over the three days.

"We're also delighted to be welcoming an impressive international delegation to Melbourne this year.

"Their interest signifies the global market's growing recognition of the high-calibre productions and talent emanating from Australia, and we look forward to more production opportunities and partnerships being created with our international colleagues."
