Rottnest Island Authority new five-year plan focusses on culture, conservation and sustainability

The Rottnest Island Authority has released its new 2023-2028 plan which focuses on conservation, sustainability, infrastructure, visitor experience, cultural heritage and building meaningful partnerships with Aboriginal communities, industry and commercial operators.

The Plan outlines the agency's approach to managing the island and its associated waters and was developed in consultation with key stakeholders, advisory groups and island businesses and was also open for a period of public comment from March to May 2023.

It is the most significant planning document for the Rottnest Island Authority and must be reviewed every five years.

WA Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti notes "This new plan reflects our Government's commitment to conserving the island's natural resources and heritage, while also maintaining its status as one of Western Australia's  iconic tourism destinations.

"Over the past few years, the Rottnest Island Authority has worked closely with advisory groups and commercial operators to ensure the island continues to be a world-class tourism destination and a unique place to visit, while respecting its history and conserving the environment.

"Tourism is one of the State's key economic drivers, and this plan reflects the success of a number of collaborative partnerships.

"I congratulate the Rottnest Island Authority Board, executive team and staff on developing this plan to continue the momentum of enhancing the visitor experience, and conserving the wonder, culture and heritage of Rottnest Island."

Rottnest Island Authority Chair Hamish Beck adds "The Rottnest Island Authority has an important responsibility to find the balance between protecting the island's environment and cultural heritage, while accommodating the desire for people to visit the island and explore everything it has to offer.

"This plan establishes a blueprint and maps out a suite of initiatives to how we make decisions and further develop the island to meet everyone's needs and interests.

"The Rottnest Island Authority Board acknowledges the State Government for its significant support and those who provided feedback during the consultation phase that has greatly assisted in shaping the island's future."
