Rockhampton Zoo celebrates 100 years and unveils new Botanic Gardens and Zoo Visitor Hub

Coinciding with Rockhampton Zoo celebrating its 100th anniversary, Rockhampton Regional Council, in partnership with the Australian Government has officially opened the $8.9 million Rockhampton Zoo & Botanic Gardens Visitor Hub.

The new entrance and zoo visitor hub received $1.5 million from the Australian Government with the remaining funding contributed through Rockhampton Regional Council's Capital Works program.

This exciting new facility offers modern amenities and an enhanced visitor experience for both locals and tourists.

The entrance now provides a welcoming and functional gathering space, supports education programs, and showcases more of the incredible animals cared for at the Zoo.

The project has also formalised the Zoo's entrance, making it easier for visitors to navigate and enjoy their time at this popular attraction.

Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said the completion of the Visitor Hub is a significant milestone for the Region and noted "this is a huge step forward for the Zoo and a real milestone as we see the completion of a modern, vibrant new entrance and hub.

"The Rockhampton Zoo welcomes around 300,000 visitors every year, and we expect that number to grow in the years to come.

"This project will only add to the visitor experience and ensure that we are continuing to put Rockhampton and the Rockhampton Zoo's best foot forward."

Mayor Williams advised that the completion of this project is just one of many key projects Council is delivering adding "With the Mount Morgan Pipeline due to be completed later this year, a critical local roads improvement program and approvals being finalised for the Rockhampton Sports Precinct, we are seeing some big wins across the region."

Federal Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Senator for Queensland, Anthony Chisholm said the new space will enhance the existing facility.

"Attractions like this one are cornerstones of the local community as they significantly advance the liveability for residents and boost the city's tourism economy," Assistant Minister Chisholm shared.

"The Zoo has long been a source of entertainment and education for all ages, and the botanic gardens, one of the oldest in the country, has been a site of relaxation for more than a century.

"We're committed to working with local councils to deliver local priorities like this, projects which create jobs, grow regional economies and improve the quality of life of regional Australians."

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the new Visitor Hub is an exciting addition that will enhance the overall experience at the Zoo and Botanic Gardens and shared "from the funding to the design through to the opening today, we are thankful to all who contributed to this fantastic facility.

"I look forward to seeing Council advancing to the next phases of the Zoo and Botanic Gardens redevelopment, further enhancing this fantastic asset that our region proudly offers."
