Reusable 'bettercups' to be available at Australian Open 2025
A strategic partnership between Sustainability Victoria and Tennis Australia will see thousands of extra reusable cups on hand at the Australian Open 2025, replacing single-use cups in the Courtside Bar and bars around Garden Square.
Made by local Victorian company bettercup, these sturdy, durable cups make reuse a winning option. It’s simple for patrons: there’s no extra cost or deposit for the cup, and after enjoying your drink, you simply drop your cup to the marked collection points.
The team from Green My Plate will wash them on site and return them to the bars to be used again and again.
Items that we throw out after using only once – often just for a few minutes – can have an impact on our environment that lasts thousands of years. That’s why we need to make reuse the first choice.
This one swap is expected to avoid more than 50,000 single-use cups going to landfill during the three weeks of the Australian Open. And the cups will have the potential to be used beyond the tournament for other Victorian events.
