Resurfacing works complete at Sydney Motorsport Park’s Dragway
The Sydney Dragway has been reopened this week following resurfacing works on its track.
Reopened on Wednesday by NSW Minister for Sport Geoff Lee, the new international standard surface forms part of a $33 million upgrade of facilities at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Minister advised “the NSW Government is committed to providing high quality and safe motorsport facilities for the drag racing community.
“This upgrade replaces the previous 15 year-old surface and provides a world class surface for racers of all levels.”
“These upgrades will deliver an outstanding event experience for motor racing competitors and fans alike.”
Key features of the upgrades at the Eastern Creek venue include a new, continuously reinforced concrete surface, as well as significant work on the grandstand, corporate facilities, lighting and power, amenities and general building maintenance.
Works were prompted by a 2019 report by Accident Investigation Services that cited 10 safety concerns relating to the venue.
Looking forward to their first major event since the refurbishments, Sydney Dragway General Manager, Darryl Stephen stated “we have already seen some world record performances on the new surface in testing, and we are looking forward to opening the doors for our fans to enjoy the new facilities at Sydney Dragway for the Gulf Western Oil Nitro Thunder on the 6th and 7th of May.”
Sydney Dragway, previously known as the Western Sydney International Dragway, is a purpose-built motorsport facility that opened in February 2004
The NSW Government has also announced that the Sydney Motorsport Park will host the acclaimed World Time Attack Challenge for a further five years - and for the first time under lights - building on a decade of success at the venue.
