Reopened Hanmer Springs welcomes visitors
Management at the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa have issued an update advising that the attraction is fully open following Monday’s New Zealand South Island earthquake earlier this week.
Advising that "Hanmer Springs was extremely fortunate and has experienced relatively minor damage", a communication from management at the attraction explained that "we reopened earlier this week, following a thorough check from engineers.
"All of our pools are now operating - including the water slides (while) both of our spas, The Spa at Hanmer Springs and Artisan Spa are also open."
The communication added "our staff have been amazing - as usual - with many in the village doing their bit to help our friends in the Waiau, Rotherham and Mt Lyford areas.
Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism (CCT) has also advised that visitors are welcome across Canterbury and New Zealand's South Island.
CCT Chief Executive Vic Allen is urging people to keep their travel plans and is reassuring visitors the disruption is confined to Kaikoura, 180 kilometres north of Christchurch.
Allen explained "the South Island remains a safe place to visit. Christchurch, Hanmer Springs, Waipara, Akaroa, Arthurs Pass, Ashburton, Timaru, the Mackenzie district and all other areas of Canterbury are operating as usual.
“Hanmer Springs is open, as is the Waipara Valley wine region, the Tranz Alpine is running as normal from Christchurch to Greymouth via Arthur’s Pass and a daily Intercity coach service between Christchurch and Picton is operating via the Lewis Pass."
Allen advised that Christchurch has been unaffected and is now regarded as one of the safest cities in the world, following a five-year infrastructure rebuild and strengthening upgrades.
