REMIX Summit to detail the coupling of arts and commerce

The links between culture, technology and entrepreneurship are to be explored at major summit in Sydney next month.

To be held at Sydney’s Carriageworks on 8th and 9th May, the REMIX Summit will explore the potential of cultural entrepreneurship, and is billed as a coming together of arts professionals, technology creators and investors. Event organisers CultureLabel.com are expecting over 1,000 delegates are expected to attend.

This is the first REMIX Summit to be presented outside of London, following its two sell-out successes at Google UK and Bloomberg UK last year. Following Sydney, REMIX heads to New York in September, and later in 2015 talks are set on Dubai and Tokyo to join the circuit.

CultureLabel.com Managing Partner Peter Tullin recently told artshub “we want to shine a light on local innovation as well as share insights from our invited international guest speakers.

“You can already see from the grassroots community of cultural entrepreneurs flourishing in locations such as Surry Hills that have led to new spaces like the Golden Age cinema to large-scale ideas festivals like VIVID that the city is looking to invest in the creative economy.

“The appetite undoubtedly exists, and REMIX simply helps to bring the technology community to the table with the cultural sector alongside innovators and disruptors from other sectors such as media to have new conversations about the future of the arts.

“If you are interested in the future of the cultural and creative industries, growing the creative economy and exploring the soft and hard infrastructure of creative cities then you need to be at REMIX Sydney.

"We wanted to get away from the standard conference format of endless keynotes. REMIX is fast and furious so speakers generally get seven minutes to make an opening statement and then it is into the Q&A and debate with their fellow panelists and of course the audience.

“We have over 75 amazing speakers from organisations such as MONA, VICE, TimeOut, YouTube, Buzzfeed … and my elevator pitch is that if they can’t offer some new perspectives on growing audiences online and offline and disrupting conventional business models then nobody can.

“It has also been necessitated by economic needs as traditional funding is cut and new models emerge that are commercially sustainable, or even wildly successful in the case of organisations like Punchdrunk or Secret Cinema where they have created new experiences that consumers crave.”

Tullin is no stranger to cultural entrepreneurship. His London company CultureLabel.com – nestled within a community of some 3,000 technology startsups in Shoreditch - is an eCommerce site offering limited edition art and design products in partnership with leading UK institutions the Tate, the Victoria and Albert Museum and British Museum to bring their products into a single website.

Tullin is used to thinking outside the box in building creative partnerships for the future and he feels Australia is ready for this next level of engagement.

He added “MoMA have been doing some pioneering work in areas such as online learning for a number of years and have often been a first mover in the digital space for our sector creating some incredible online experiences and blurring the digital and physical worlds. Allegra has been at the heart of that and she will talk about their strategy for how organisations can put digital and developing great content at the heart of everything..

“Clearly, not everyone has the scale and resources of MoMA of course but many of the lessons are applicable and the cost of testing ideas in this area has crashed in recent years with the rise of open source tools and as tech companies such as Google have begun to collaborate with the cultural sector. We will also get a view from Allegra about where all this is going.”
