Registrations open for 2012 International Awards for Liveable Communities
Registrations are now open for the 2012 International Awards for Liveable Communities (the 'LivCom Awards') which focus on international best practice in environmental management and in the creation of liveable communities.
The LivCom Awards are the world's only awards competition focussing on international best practice regarding the management of the local environment. Their objective is to develop and share international best practice, with the further objective of improving the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of 'liveable communities'.
Launched in 1997, and endorsed by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), with which it shares a Memorandum of Understanding, the awards are managed by a UK- registered charity.
LivCom is non-political, embracing all nations and cultures and, since their inception, over 50 countries have been represented within the Awards.
Australian communities have fared well in the awards with, in 2011, Joondalup City winning the Category D Whole City Award; the City of Mandurah runner-up in the Category B Whole City Award; the City of Mandurah and the City of Greater Geraldton were both Criteria Award winners.
Among the awards:
• The Environmentally Sustainable Project Awards are open to both the Public and Private Sectors and Partnerships of both. The objective of the Project Awards is to encourage Developers to have the same environmental objectives as communities.
• The Bursary Award is open, free of charge, to communities participating in the Whole City Awards. The Award will be made for a neighbourhood Project, with a maximum Capital cost of ï¾£20,000, which demonstrates the objectives of The LivCom Awards.
• Any person with a responsibility for the local environment, political or technical, has a responsibility to be aware of Best Practice beyond that of their own country. There is a duty to be aware of International Best Practice and this can best be achieved by participation in The LivCom Awards.
Key dates for 2012 are:
• Registration closes - 31st May
• Closing date for Written Submission - 30th June
The 2012 finals will be held in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates from 22nd to 26th November.
