Reclink Australia welcomes $2 million Federal Government funding commitment

Reclink Connect, the program launched in response to COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing safety measures, is to be backed by $2 million in funding over two years announced by Australian Minister for Health, Greg Hunt.

The backing for the new national program, announced yesterday, is based upon the Reclink Australia traditions of socially engaging those most vulnerable in the community and is designed to keep the community as connected and engaged as possible during Coronavirus restrictions.

Reclink’s national program currently operates in 25 targeted communities around Australia and reaches thousands of community members experiencing multiple forms of serious disadvantage including unemployment, drug and alcohol addiction, domestic and community violence, recidivism, mental and physical health issues, problem gambling, social isolation, and socio-economic disadvantage. Reclink also works with CALD and indigenous communities to coordinate suitable programs for uniquely identified needs within these groups.

This significant funding will allow Reclink to continue their structured sports, recreation, and arts programs to assist many of Australia’s most disadvantaged communities through involvement in these activities.

Welcoming the funding, Reclink Chief Executive, John Ballis stated “we are extremely grateful for this commitment from the Federal Government, and their appreciation for the work Reclink Australia does with some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people around Australia.”

Reclink’s mission to include the unincluded helps break through these barriers and reach people who too often fall through the cracks. Their programs have recently been independently evaluated by La Trobe University’s Centre for Sport and Social Impact, and have shown to deliver proven, positive results.

Reclink participants felt the need to access mental health services less frequently, spent less time in a drug or alcohol facility, reduced use of drugs and alcohol, spent less time in correctional facilities and less involvement with police, reduced problem gambling, and experienced improved outcomes for both employment and housing.

Reclink Australia provides evidence-based sports, arts, and recreation programs to disadvantaged Australians to create socially inclusive, life-changing opportunities. In partnership with more than 400 community organisations, Reclink Australia's programs create pathways to improved health and wellbeing, education and employment outcomes for all participants.
