Queensland's Super Star fund brings Ballet coup
The Queensland Ballet has secured the first Australian production of Sir Kenneth Macmillan’s classic Romeo & Juliet through the Queensland Government's ‘Super Star’ Fund.
Queensland Minister for Arts Ian Walker said he was delighted the Fund would be used to bring the production to Australia, as the centrepiece of the 2014 season just announced.
Minister Walker stated “Romeo & Juliet is the first project to be funded through the super star fund which will provide $3 million over four years to support local performing arts companies to feature internationally renowned artists in productions exclusive to Queensland.
“We promised to bring international stars to Queensland and we are delivering on that promise.”
Queensland Ballet’s Artistic Director Li Cunxin said he was honoured Queensland Ballet would be the first company in Australia to produce Macmillian’s Romeo & Juliet, considered by many to be greatest version. The cast includes international talent Tamara Rojo, Carlos Acosta and Steven McRae.
Cunxin added “it is an incredible coup for Queensland to secure this exclusive production of Sir Kenneth Macmillan’s Romeo & Juliet. This superstar production will attract worldwide attention, placing Queensland Ballet on a global stage.”
Li Cunxin is enthused about his second season with the Ballet, which will also include a world premiere. Ballet master and former Australian Ballet principal Greg Horsman will create a new Coppélia for the company to be performed in April.
