Queensland Government pledges $350,000 for Longreach facilities ahead of 2032 Olympics

The Queensland Government has committed to upgrading key facilities in Longreach in partnership with the Longreach Regional Council as part of the ‘Games On!’ program.

The major part of the commitment will see the Longreach Showgrounds receive $280,000 in upgrades, including:

• Refurbishment of three dressing rooms to increase capacity;

• Construction of two new accessible changerooms, ensuring dedicated spaces for male and female athletes;

• A first aid room to enhance athlete safety.

In addition, a new floating pontoon will also be constructed on the Thomson River which will allow for more accessibility for rowing and boating.

Advising that the investment would ensure a lasting legacy for the region that extends beyond the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Queensland Minister for Sport and Racing, and Minister for Olympic and Paralympic Games, Tim Mander stated “2032 will be Queensland’s Games and we want to ensure Longreach continues to shine as a premier regional sporting hub.

“After 1,200 days of Games chaos from the former Labor government and we will deliver the Games, Queenslanders deserve.

“We have also launched consultation on our ‘What Does 2032 Mean for You?’ Discussion Paper.

“I encourage everyone in Longreach to get involved to help shape the future of sport in the region.”

Longreach Mayor, Tony Rayner said the investments will help improve liveability and encourage participation in sport and exercise contributing to improved health outcomes.

Mayor Rayner noted “the pontoon acquisition is particularly beneficial as Longreach advocates for the Thomson River to be used as a training venue for the 2032 Olympics for smaller nations.”
