Smart approach to construction vital for delivery of Brisbane 2032 Games
The Australian Constructors Association (ACA) has welcomed the Queensland Government's response to the Olympic and Paralympic Games Review noting the announcement brings much-needed certainty. However, ACA Chief Executive Jon Davies said the real work starts now with a smarter approach to delivery being critical.
Davies notes "Queensland cannot afford further delays caused by slow business cases and inefficient procurement processes.
"Inefficient procurement across the nation is driving delays, cost overruns and contractor insolvencies. If it doesn't change, we won't be able to deliver the 2032 Games.
"To deliver a successful Games, we need a smarter, more efficient approach to construction - one that treats it as a team sport, not a battle of bureaucracy.
"The Queensland Government's shopping list of projects must be paired with clear objectives, allowing the construction industry the freedom to determine the best way to deliver.
"This isn't about handing over projects and waiting at the finish line - it's about engaging contractors early and balancing risk to ensure success for all. Government needs to look beyond the lowest tender price and embrace innovation, efficiency and sustainability.
"Delivering the 2032 games in Brisbane is entirely achievable and getting it right will extend far beyond the Olympics. It will strengthen Australia's construction industry, which currently accounts for over a third of all business insolvencies.
"We need to trust the construction industry to deliver the infrastructure we need, not just for the Games, but for the future."
The Australian Constructors Association is the only representative body for contractors delivering vertical and horizontal construction projects, as well as undertaking infrastructure asset management. Their members construct and service the majority of major infrastructure projects built in Australia every year. Their goal is to create a more sustainable construction industry.
