Queensland Government introduces legislation for new Olympic Games legacy authority
Having already pledged to deliver a new plan for the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics as of early next year, the Queensland Government has introduced legislation to Parliament for a new Games legacy authority.
Delivering on a commitment to establish an independent Games coordination authority in the first month of Government, the Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games Arrangements and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 will enable the appointment of the Authority and commencement of a 100-day review.
The rescoped Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority’s core focus will be planning and delivering infrastructure, transport and legacy projects, to enhance liveability and sustain future growth for Queenslanders.
Advising said introducing the new laws would ensure the delivery of a world-class event, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli stated "hosting the Games brings unique opportunities to forge ahead with generational infrastructure, transport and sustainable economic growth to set our State up for a bright and prosperous future.
“Not only will these laws enable the 100-Day Review, but it also establishes a clearer purpose for the Authority’s work around Games legacy, ensuring regional Queensland benefits from the Games.
“These amendments are about successfully delivering a Games Queenslanders can be proud of, focused on driving a lasting legacy right across the State.”
Queensland Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the Bill further cemented the government’s focus on securing the greatest post-Games legacy for Queenslanders, well beyond the event itself, adding "the Games will be a landmark, historic event not only for Regional Queensland and the South East, but also Australia - and we will make sure of that."
