Queensland Government commits $45 million to help make community sports more inclusive and accessible

Local sport and active recreation facilities will be made safer, more accessible, inclusive and efficient, through the Queensland Government’s $45 million Minor Infrastructure and Inclusive Facilities Fund (MIIFF).

Backing 171 projects across Queensland with approved funding to enhance community level sport and active recreation participation, the program supports two categories:

Inclusive and Accessible - to support new and upgraded changerooms and amenities that meet universal design principles

Safe, Quality and Efficient - to support new, upgraded and end-of-life field of play and ancillary facilities to meet activity requirements at a community level.

Some of the projects to receive funding include new lighting to support rugby league in Doomadgee, football in Beenleigh and Oztag in Townsville; building new amenities for netball in Mount Isa and Cairns; constructing new changerooms for football in Mackay, Wondai, Carrara, Jimboomba and Darra; and upgrading the facilities at the lawn bowls clubs in Benowa and Quilpie.

The $16.35 million Round 1 of the Minor Infrastructure Program (MIP) saw overwhelming demand and supported 91 projects.

Round 2 of MIP was brought forward as a result of this demand and combined with increased funding from the Inclusive Facilities Fund to target shovel-ready projects.

This increase includes $20 million as part of a $37 million investment in women and girls’ sport, announced in August 2023.

Regardless of age or ability, an active community is a healthy community, and through programs like the Minor Infrastructure and Inclusive Facilities Fund, the Queensland Government is supporting every community to be more active more often.
