PyeongChang establishes 2018 organising committee

Kim Jin-Sun, who played a key role in all three of PyeongChang's recent bids for the Winter Olympics, has been elected President and Chief Executive of the organising committee for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

At the inaugural meeting of the PyeongChang 2018 General Assembly, Kim, the former Governor of the Gangwon Province who served as special ambassador for the most recent bid, was confirmed as the head of the organising committee.

Moon Dong-hoo, who was involved in organising this year's International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Daegu and was also a key figure for the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 2002 FIFA World Cup, which was co-hosted by Korea and Japan, has been installed as Vice-President and Secretary General for the Games.

Now, the organising committee's first task will be to meet with the International Olympic Committee and decide on venue specifications for the 2018 Games.

Following his election Kim Jin-Sun stated "the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games should take place in an economically viable, socio-culturally reasonable, eco-friendly and peaceful manner.

"Every single stakeholder such as the national government, the Gangwon Provincial government, the National Assembly, the Korean Olympic Committee, and the Korean people should work together for the realisation of this goal."

Having failed in bids to land the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics, PyeongChang beat Munich and French candidate Annecy for the right to stage the 2018 Winter Games earlier this year.
