Development application approved for Launceston’s UTAS Stadium
The City of Launceston Council has approved a Development Application for the $130 million redevelopment of UTAS Stadium.
The approved Development Application includes the construction of a new Centre West Stand, additional seating in the Western Stand, and a redeveloped Eastern Stand with key features of the project including modern player amenities, corporate spaces, improved food and beverage outlets, and enhanced pedestrian access.
The redevelopment is expected to deliver essential upgrades to enhance spectator experiences and ensuring the venue’s longevity.
Launceston Mayor Garwood said the approval was a “game-changer” for the city, stating “this redevelopment cements UTAS Stadium’s position as northern Tasmania’s hub for sport, entertainment, and community events.
“It will deliver state-of-the-art facilities for athletes, spectators, and attendees, while boosting local tourism and economic activity.”
Noting that the venue’s redevelopment will ensure the ongoing attraction of marquee events, while providing community users with an elevated event-day experience, Stadiums Tasmania Chief Executive, James Avery stated “the redevelopment project cements UTAS Stadium’s standing as a premier sports and entertainment venue that delivers a significant range of economic, cultural and social outcomes for Northern Tasmania.
Latest improvements tested
The approval of the DA follows the completion of the latest upgrades to match day facilities at the venue that were put to the test by Hawthorn for their 29th March win against GWS Giants.
Tasmanian Minister for Sports and Events, Nick Duigan said it was great to hear the positive feedback from Hawthorn players and their support team at the recent night AFL game, commenting “we are pleased the existing matchday facilities have been brought up to Australian tier 2 sporting code guidelines. These works were completed in time for the first AFL clash of the season at UTAS Stadium.
“Umpires, officials and players now have refurbished change rooms, medical, massage and strapping rooms, a briefing room, warm up and training spaces.
“This project has enhanced the AFL experience for both players and officials and is just the beginning of improvements at UTAS.”
The Tasmanian Government recently extended its agreement with Hawthorn Football Club to play AFL pre-season and premiership season games at UTAS Stadium until 2027.
