Power of Sport Conference to focus on growing sport participation

The focus for the upcoming inaugural Power of Sport Conference, co-located with the National Synthetic Surfaces Conference & Expo (NSSCE), will be on growing sports participation at a community level.

To be held at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens on 3rd and 4th June 2014, the conference will feature presentations from key Australian sports organisations including Tennis Australia, Australian Football League/Cricket Australia, Hockey Australia, National Rugby League, Skateboarding Australia and the Australian Rugby Union.

With the changing dynamics of sports participation showing that traditional sports club offerings are not meeting the needs of the community, new research suggests both adults and children are using sport facilities for fitness, social connections and fun.

Explaining this trend, the Power of Sport Conference conference will feature an Australian Sports Commission presentation on changing patterns of sport participation and the impact on community sport.

Other key sessions will focus on:

• Vicki Reid, Strategic Projects Manager at Tennis Australia will speak on repackaging a traditional sport for the modern market and how tennis will have one of Australia’s fastest growing junior programs.

• Josh Vanderloo, National Development Manager at the AFL will explain how the AFL is ensuring a clear pathway exists between recreational programs, to the programs and product offerings.

• Women in Sport – Clare Hanlon, Associate Professor, Sport Management at Victoria University will explain the drivers and barriers associated with women to be active and how these can be converted to strategies to recruit and retain them in sport and physical activity programs.

• Glenn Walker, General Manager of Skateboarding Australia will explain how skateboarding has become one of the fastest growing sports without having a formal club program.

Looking forward to the Conference, Martin Sheppard, Managing Director of the Smart Connection Company and co-promoter of the conference say that “we are very aware that sport can inspire a nation (but) we need to consider the next generation, who may want the traditional sports club approaches for their conference that have understood the dynamic had trend changed and are investing for the future.”

Being held at Rosehill Gardens in Western Sydney, the National Synthetic Surfaces Conference & Expo, co-located with Power of Sport Conference will be held on 3rd and 4th June 2014 (with an ‘Innovations Tour’ on 5th June).
