Port Hedland to be home to Australia's biggest skate park

Construction of Australia’s largest skate park, in the Pilbara town of Port Hedland, is taking shape with the first concrete pour commencing last week.

Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett said the $3.6 million South Hedland Youth Space project was a result of collaboration with the community, industry and government and is a key component of the revitalisation of South Hedland town centre.

Mayor Howlett explained “the Town and our funding partners are extremely proud of this project as it demonstrates what can be achieved by working closely and extensively with the community.

“One of the key outcomes of this project is to create an open space where all members of the community, regardless of age, can feel safe and comfortable and that enhances the South Hedland Town Centre.

“I feel that we have achieved this – the South Hedland Youth Space is ideally situated in the heart of the town centre, close to the library, pool and Hedland Well Women’s Centre and is a short walk to the shopping centre and other commercial outlets.

“Young people play an important role in shaping our community – recent statistics show that young people make up a large part of our population and their contributions, both socially and economically are what make the town grow.

“Key features of the South Hedland Youth Space include integrated pathways connecting the space with surrounding areas, landscaping, open areas for events and meetings, two skate bowls, viewing platforms, shade and lighting.

“The youth space will be painted in bright colours based on feedback from the young people involved in the consultation process.

“The Town looks forward to developing programs to continue the involvement of young people in this project, including during the construction, landscaping and opening of the youth space.

“The youth space project also reinforces the Town’s position that growth is not slowing down – in fact it’s progressing at a steady pace, evidenced by the great number of projects we have underway such as the construction of Dome Coffees, the selling and leasing of lots at Kingsford Smith Business Park and the renovations and ongoing redevelopment of the Port Hedland International Airport.

“The Town would like to thank our principal partner BHP Billiton Iron Ore and supporting partners Fortescue Metals Group, Lotterywest and Landcorp for their contribution towards the project.

“Their continued support and vision for the Town has helped see a number of projects in Port Hedland become reality.”

The expected completion date for the South Hedland Youth Space is the end of April 2015.
