Port Hedland sport and community hub revitalised to host array of events
The redeveloped Port Hedland Community Centre which also provides new facilities for the Port Hedland Turf Club can now host events, conferences, arts and cultural exhibitions, a provincial racing circuit and other tourism-related events.
The redevelopment of the Community Centre was a $10 million election commitment. The community centre is stage one of a larger project planned by the Town of Port Hedland and was co-funded by the Town, which contributed $8.7 million towards the project.
The accessible two-storey building includes two large function spaces (which can be divided into four), community spaces, toilets, changerooms, sheltered viewing areas, two commercial-grade kitchens, a judging box, broadcast tower and the refurbishment of the existing stables.
The Port Hedland Turf Club will now serve as the emergency evacuation centre for the town should Port Hedland become isolated from South Hedland as a result of an extreme weather event.

WA Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman notes “The upgrades to the Port Hedland Turf Club facilities and stables will make it an exciting drawcard on the regional racing circuit.
“This redevelopment will be a wonderful new community hub for locals and visitors, not only giving them a newer and better place to get together but also a space where they can take part in a wide variety of sporting, art, cultural and recreational activities.”
Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel added “the redevelopment of the Community Centre was an election commitment and I am so pleased to see it come to fruition.
“The project has created so many opportunities for the local community to meet, recreate and participate in sports. It is a fantastic outcome and I know the community will benefit for years to come.”
