Port Augusta Central Oval project wins national industry accolade
Port Augusta’s newest community facility has been recognised as the nation’s best regional project by the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS).
The AIQS Infinite Value Awards celebrate the success of the global construction industry. The Port Augusta Central Oval Community Sporting Complex was presented with the prestigious award, due to its significant and positive impact on the community.
Creating 21 direct and 25 indirect local employment opportunities, the Sporting Complex has successfully stimulated employment rates.
A further 65 jobs were created during the project’s construction during 2014/15, with local contractors allocated $7 million of the projects $21 million budget.
Officially opened in April this year, the Complex is one of the state’s priority projects in the Regional Development of Australia Far North Roadmap and Strategic Infrastructure Plan.
The Complex consolidates, for the first time in 30 years, AFL, football, netball and basketball in a single location.
State-of-the-art sporting facilities include an AFL standard football oval, outdoor netball courts, changing rooms and multi-purpose courts. With additional community facilities and a dedicated function space, the complex provides a hub for both sporting and community events in the local and surrounding areas.
The construction of the Central Oval Complex has further expanded opportunities for local indigenous residents.
The Far North region of South Australia is home to 13% of South Australia’s indigenous population.
This new Complex aims to encourage participation and help to build and strengthen communication channels through the shared use of the facility.
Indigenous youth will also benefit from improved sporting facilities and clinics, leading to the potential for enhanced career opportunities.
Already attracting visitors, the facility has been attributed to increasing economic expenditure within the surrounding area.
Next year, the complex will play host to the National Spirit of ANZAC event, one of only 23 locations around Australia hosting the travelling exhibition. This is a once in a generation event, the local community would otherwise not have had the chance to host.
Donald Cant Watts Corke SA, Managing Director David Scott, responsible for the delivery of Quantity Surveying services at the facility, was thrilled with the announcement.
Scott stated “the Central Oval Complex is an exciting project for the local community and our team is proud to have partnered with Federal, State and Local government to turn this idea into a reality.”
Donald Cant Watts Corke was further recognised for their significant contribution to the construction industry for their best people and the outstanding project results they deliver, with finalists including Associate Matthew Ferrantino – Future Leader Award and Toowoomba Regional Arts and Community Centre (Armitage Centre) – Regional Project Award.
