Plan looks to attract more events to Mackay’s BB Print Stadium
The Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC) events team has advised that it is developing a plan to help attract more events and enhance spectator experiences at the BB Print Stadium Mackay - the home of rugby league side the Mackay Cutters
As part of the plan, a memorandum of understanding is being developed, subject to Council approval, which will bring the stadium management role inhouse to Mackay Regional Council.
The plan will allow both parties to concentrate on their core business with the Mackay Cutters better placed to manage their six rugby league teams and build their membership and sponsorship bases and the MECC and events team focusing on attracting and delivering high-calibre events to activate the stadium.
Mackay Regional Council Chief Executive, Scott Owen said a key catalyst for the transition was the Mackay Stadium Masterplan, commenting “Council has allocated $3.1 million as part of its current budget for Mackay Stadium refurbishment and master planning for future development.
“The Cutters management contract was also expiring, so the opportunity was taken to look at options for management and operation of the stadium.”
Mackay Cutters Chief Executive, Mitch Cook said the plan will be a great outcome for the stadium, adding “we’ll be able to concentrate on footy, knowing our interests in the stadium are being looked after as part of a greater plan to activate and improve the facility going forward.”
