Phil Durkin assumes AALARA Presidency, and gets thrust into media spotlight
The recent AGM of the Australian Amusement, Leisure and Recreation Association (AALARA) saw Phil Durkin, Director of Phil Durkin Special Events, assume the role of Association President succeeding outgoing President Tony Lines, Human Resources Manager for the Movie World Business Unit of Village Roadshow Theme Parks.
Phil Durkin has been operating in the Australian amusement industry for over thirty years and currently owns and operates the Slingshot and Insanity attractions as well as being involved in many of Australia's premier events, his company operating at over 40 events across Australia each year.
Durkin has held a board position with AALARA for the past six years and is a member of the Showmens Guild of Australasia.
Taking on the role of AALARA President, Durkin was immediately thrust into the media spotlight in following injuries suffered by a five-year-old child who fell from an amusement ride at a school fete north of Toowoomba on Sunday 19th May.
Durkin was interviewed by national, regional and trade media, extending his concerns to the child and his family while also emphasising amusement ride operators' overall commitment to safety.
Other changes at AALARA have seen Lollipops Playlands General Manager Tim Newman-Morris assume the role of Vice-President; and Greg O'Neill and David Thompson join the board.
O'Neill, Managing Director of Amusement Leisure Services, is a former AALARA President while Thompson has been General Manager of the Aussie World theme park on the Sunshine Coast for the past 12 years.
O'Neill was also, along with engineer Brian Bradley, presented with the AALARA Gold Service Award, for services to the Australian amusement industry.
AALARA's links with the Sunshine Coast look set to grow with the announcement that its 2014 Conference is to be held there.
