Perth Community Playing Fields reaches important milestone

The Perth Community Playing Fields Project has reached another important milestone with the calling for tenders for the construction of the new synthetic sporting fields at Dorrien Gardens.

Perth Soccer Club’s Board of Management has decided to stage the development of the project over two financial years, to ensure it progresses sustainably and with the least disruption to club members and existing programs.

The Perth Community Playing Fields Project is a proposal by the Perth SC to convert natural turf at its home ground Dorrien Gardens to three new synthetic community playing fields.

The three new fields will cater for football, touch football, gridiron and several other sports, along with creating a new facility for community groups and local schools to utilise.

It will also include upgrades to parking, lighting and change rooms at Dorrien Gardens.

Stage One will commence later this year and will include:

• Resurfacing of football pitches no 2 and 3 (back pitches)
• Construction of carpark no 1 (north-west corner of the property)
• Fencing and netting
• Lighting upgrades (main and back pitches)
• Change room additions

The club expects Stage One to be completed by April 2016.

Stage Two of the project will take place in 2016/17, and will include:

• Resurfacing of football pitch no 1 (main pitch)
• Construction of carpark no 2 (along boundary with Fitzgerald Street carpark near the WA Italian Club)

The club intends to commence siteworks for Stage Two in October 2016, with all works to be completed by March 2017, ready for the start of the 2017 National Premier League season.

Perth SC President Gary Marocchi said the project would make Dorrien Gardens one of the State’s premier community playing fields, stating "we are very excited to be progressing this project, which will allow many of our junior teams to return to the club’s spiritual home at Dorrien Gardens.

“It will revitalise an under-utilised asset and attract new sports, competitions and other structured physical activities for the community to enjoy, and provide a solution to the lack of inner-city playing and training venues for community sporting teams.”

The Perth Community Playing Fields Project is being supported by the Western Australian Government through the Department of Sport and Recreation who are a major supporter of community sport and recreation facilities in the State.

The City of Vincent is also providing financial support to the project, contributing to the new change rooms and lighting upgrade as part of its 2015/16 Budget.
