'Perfect day' for Royal Queensland Show opening

Blessed with fine weather, the Royal Queensland Show has opened its gates for the 138th year on in Brisbane.

The annual 10-day Ekka is a celebration of Queensland's agriculture industry, aimed at bringing a touch of the country to the city.

For this year's opening day, organisers predicted 30,000 people attended - a potentially record-breaking turn-out.

The Ekka usually attracts more than 400,000 patrons over its 10-day run.

Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) President David Thomas said the crowds had been sensational, stating “as soon as the gates opened they just started flooding in.

"Queenslanders love the show, they love to come out and celebrate, and this is just a perfect Queensland day for it - the sun's shining, the sky is blue.

"This is the second time we've opened on the Friday and if we get 30,000 today we'll be very happy."

The Ekka’s night show this year is a 360 degree arena spectacular will be filled with lasers, Transformers, fireworks, motorbikes, monster trucks and a brand new fireworks finale set to wow audiences.

This year’s Ekka is taking account of the drought being endured across much of rural Queensland.
