NSW Health launches ‘Clean Pools for Healthy Swimming’ Campaign
NSW Health has been running the ‘Clean Pools for Healthy Swimming’ campaign with an aim of reducing the risk of Cryptosporidium outbreaks in swimming pools and spa pools over the summer period.
Mindful that cryptosporidiosis occurences are common and can result in bad publicity for swimming pool centres and swim schools, the most important message in the educational campaign has been to ensure that people don’t swim if they have had diarrhoea in the past two weeks.
The NSW Health ‘Public Swimming Pool and Spa Pool Advisory Document’ (to be found at Chapter 8 on the website) provides good advice for pool managers on ways to prevent Cryptosporidiosis with simple management strategies to help protect public health and business reputation.
NSW Health recommends that the Cryptosporidium prevention brochures are handed out when children are registered for swimming lessons. It is also good policy to allow make-up lessons when a child is sick. This encourages parents to keep their children at home and out
of the pool, which helps prevent the spread of diseases in swimming pools.
Educational material for Cryptosporidium prevention is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment/publicpools.
