NSW Government to introduce event planning legislation

The NSW Government is planning to introduce special events legislation that would enable it to override local government planning laws to facilitate the management of major events in the state.
The legislation would give certainty to the Rally Australia organising committee about a time frame for approval of required applications from the Tweed and Kyogle Shire Councils to allow the Rally to go ahead.
Garry Connelly, Chairman, of Rally Australia's organising committee said that the world controlling body for motorsport, FIA, was concerned about reports that the required local government consents were yet to be received, despite the fact the event is scheduled in September.
The NSW Minister for State Development, Ian MacDonald said the legislation would permit the Government to impose environmental protection measures to manage any temporary impacts on affected local areas.
Connelly said the legislation would now facilitate the eventâs continuing marketing and promotional strategies, including the launch of ticket sales in the near future.
