NSW Government funding for redevelopment of Sydney's White City will see Hakoah Club widen membership

The Hakoah Club’s $65 million redevelopment of Sydney's White City tennis complex into a contemporary multi-faceted sports and community venue is understood to have secured $7.5 million funding from the NSW Government.

Announced, with little fanfare, in September, the new funding for the Jewish community club comes on top of an earlier $7.5 million announced by the Federal Government

The new funding is also understood to have prompted the Hakoah Club to clarify its membership rules, advising that locals will soon be invited to start applying for membership even if they don’t know anyone in the long running Jewish club.

The redevelopment has been largely funded by generous philanthropists from the Jewish community, but the funding from the Federal and NSW Governments has prompted local residents to demand more information about how accessible the club will be to residents.

As reported by local newspaper The Wentworth Courier, residents can contact the club via their website to express interest in joining.

If they don’t know a member to endorse them, the club will arrange a meet and greet to connect them with a member who can then provide the endorsement.

The development will deliver new sports facilities will include a football field, learn to swim pool, tennis courts, basketball, netball and futsal courts as well as a gym, fitness and wellness centre plus a café.

Schools will be welcome to use the facilities for sports carnivals, community groups and clubs can book out courts and any children and their parents attending these events will not have to be members.

Advising that the club hoped to sign the construction contracts late this year, White City Redevelopment Project Manager, Robert Woolf told The Wentworth Courier “is the club open for public membership, yes.

“Once conditions precedent have been met and construction commences the club will be seeking membership of local residents and broader public. Gym memberships will go on sale closer to expected opening in second half 2023.

“The Paddington community is a high priority. It will also be in the local community interest for as many members as possible to arrive by foot.”
