Northern Territory Government looks for investment in new waterpark

The Northern Territory Government has released an Expressions of Interest for interested parties to invest in a water theme park in Darwin.

Facilitating the development of “a new international standard water theme park in Darwin”, the project aims to:

• Improve the liveability of Darwin by providing a large scale family attraction and event destination
• Add to Darwin’s tourism competitive strengths by providing a significant reason to visit and stay longer in the city
• Stimulate and support the local economy by attracting major investment, and
• Create substantial and enduring employment opportunities.

To be built on a Greenfield site close to the centre of Darwin, the NT Government is looking to attract investment of up to $50 million in the project.

The NT Government advise “the Darwin Water Theme Park project represents a unique and exciting opportunity to design construct, operate and maintain an international standard water theme park in Darwin.”

It is expected that the project will leverage the $200 million investment by the Northern Territory Government in tourism marketing and infrastructure over the next five years.

In August 2017, the NT Government engaged Pico Play to complete a detailed business case for the Darwin Water Theme Park.

The NT Government will shortly consider the detailed business case and decide whether to approach the market to facilitate private sector development of the project.
