No naming rights sale for new Perth Stadium

The Western Australian Government has rejected the sale of naming rights for its new 60,000 seat stadium on the Burswood Peninsula with announcement that the venue will be known as the Perth Stadium.

Rejecting the sale of the venue's naming rights in favour of a name that will boost it tourism value, Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett explained "we received several suggestions and the overwhelming feedback was that the name should reflect Perth and WA, so I’m delighted with this outcome which capitalises on the stadium’s tourism value for the State.

“Having the name of the host city within the name of that city’s most significant big sports grounds is common practice around the world.

"Think of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Adelaide Oval and the Singapore Sports Hub as very well-known examples."

Recent naming rights deals for major Australian venues are believed to have been worth in excess of $5 million a year, with Etihad Stadium in Melbourne believed to have secured between $5 million and $8 million per year for naming rights in a seven-year deal agreed in 2012 and ANZ paying $31 million in 2007 for a seven-year naming rights deal for what was previously known as Stadium Australia.

Speaking on Sunday (16th August), Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said the detailed Design Development phase of the stadium was now nearing completion.

Minister Davies stated "the latest digital technology has been utilised to build a virtual model of the stadium, which we are pleased to release today.

“This new animation will be first shown to the crowd at Subiaco who, in a couple of years’ time will be watching the Eagles and the Dockers play at this fabulous new venue.

“It brings to life the outstanding ‘fans first’ experience that will be delivered at Perth Stadium . This latest model incorporates the design, construction, scheduling and facilities management information and has replaced traditional flat two-dimensional plans.”

Construction of the new Stadium is now 25% complete and remains on schedule to open for the start of the 2018 AFL season.

The process to secure the stadium operator is also well under way and the contract is expected to be awarded in early 2016.
