Newcastle Entertainment Centre embraces recycling
The AEG Ogden managed Newcastle Entertainment Centre has introduced an initiative to reduce packaging waste and increase recycling at the venue.
Funded by the Newcastle Entertainment Centre and the Australian Food and Grocery Council's Packaging Stewardship Forum's (PSF), 78 new waste and recycling bins have been installed throughout the venue carrying the PSF's Do The Right Thing, Use the Right Bin recycling message.
The initiative will provide away from home recycling opportunities for over 300,000 visitors each year and recycle up to 85 tonnes of aluminium cans and PET bottles from landfill annually - equivalent to nearly 12,000 household wheelie bins.
Newcastle Entertainment Centre General Manager Chris Blanch explains that "we appreciate the support of the PSF towards making the venue environmentally friendly."
PSF General Manager Jenny Pickles said the aim of the program is to get people recycling just as effectively when they are away from home as they do when they're at home using their kerbside collection systems.
Pickles added that "through well placed infrastructure, good promotion and our message of 'Do the Right Thing Use the Right Bin' we have shown we can deliver effective away from home recycling systems in public places."
Newcastle Entertainment Centre is one of six well known New South Wales entertainment and sporting venues participating in the PSF's away from home recycling program, with recycling bins already installed at Sydney Opera House, Sydney Theatre Company, Centennial Parklands, Gosford's Blue Tongue Stadium and Acer Arena.
