New Zealand Recreation Industry Leaders Recognised

The New Zealand Recreation Association has announced the winners of its annual Awards. Presented at this week's annual NZRA Conference Gala Dinner in Hastings, the recipients were recognised for their outstanding contribution to the parks and recreation industry.

NZRA Chief Executive, Brendon Ward, says the standard of this year’s nominations was extremely high and those selected by the judges represent the best, most successful project, park, facility or event held during the past year.

Ward explained that “every year the standard of award nominations gets higher and higher – and this year was no different,” says Mr Ward. “The judges were impressed with all the nominations and it was no easy decision picking the winners. But, those who received awards were worthy of special consideration. Not only did they meet our criteria - but they showed innovation, commitment and passion for their work.

“It’s that kind of attitude that leads to great results, not just for those in the industry – although all our winners are inspirational – but for the New Zealand public who experience and benefit from their work.”

Auckland entries dominated the field this year, with Manukau Leisure winning both the NZRA Outstanding Facility Award (for Te Matariki Clendon Community Centre) and the Outstanding Pool Award (for Manurewa Aquatic Centre).

Auckland City Council’s McKenzie Reserve won the NZRA Outstanding Project, while Manukau City Council and Isthmus Group Ltd won the coveted NZRA Outstanding Park Award (for Barry Curtis Park).

The SPARC Push Play Award went to Sport Northland for its Active Workplaces program, and the NZRA Outstanding Community Recreation Programme Award also went to Auckland, with ProCare Health Ltd picking up the award for its Women’s Swimming Programme.

Four individual awards were presented to acknowledge extraordinary people who have motivated others and achieved great success in their field.

The winner of the 2009 Ian Galloway Memorial Cup (which recognises excellence and outstanding personal contribution to the wider parks industry) is Albert James, Parks and Reserves Manager for Manawatu District and Feilding Borough. During his 31 years in the industry, Albert has transformed the district, with the town of Fielding being judged by Keep New Zealand Beautiful the most beautiful town in New Zealand 14 out of the last 17 years.

This year’s recipient of the Mark Mitchell Memorial Trophy (which recognises excellence and outstanding personal contribution to the wider recreation industry) is Lesley Symington. Lesley’s contribution to recreation within the Canterbury region spans over 20 years. She has held various roles within Christchurch City Council (CCC), QE2 park and most recently Selwyn District Council, and was instrumental in creating CCC’s recreation service. Lesley is dedicated, professional and a strong advocate for community well-being.

Brett Jude, CEO of Manukau Leisure, was awarded the Paul Stuart Memorial Award (for excellence and outstanding personal contribution to the wider facility management industry). As head of this council controlled organisation, Brett is regarded as a notable businessman and leader who inspires the best from his team and epitomises the company’s vision.

This year’s NZRA President’s Award went to Douglas Bracewell - an athlete, coach, mentor and motivator. During the past 25 years, Doug (who is the sports development advisor and coaching coordinator for Sport Wellington-Wairarapa) has made a huge contribution to the local Wairarapa community, particularly in his many coaching roles (both cricket and rugby).

NZRA President, John Latimer, congratulated Doug and all the winners on their dedication, energy and enthusiasm, saying they were fantastic role models for the recreation industry.

As Latimer stated, “we are fortunate to have such talented, hard-working people in our industry.

“The programmes, facilities and people recognised tonight have all made a positive difference in their local community and we are proud to honour them with these awards. We hope they continue to achieve their goals and blaze a trail for others to follow.”
