New Zealand Government commits to major recreation and sport projects
With Prime Minister John Key's ruling National Party having won a resounding victory in Saturday's election, the next New Zealand Government is expected to fund several major election promises relating to leisure.
John Key is set to lead New Zealand for a third consecutive term after official results showed his party garnered 48% of the national vote, and would likely end up with 61 seats in a 121-member Parliament.
In Auckland, Prime Minister Key committed $100 million for cycleways and the creation of a Hauraki Gulf recreational fishing reserve.
On the South Island, he has committed at least $15 bilion into the post earthquake rebuilding of Christchurch with $1.7 billion set aside for 'flagship projects' such as the convention centre, an aquatic and sport 'hub' facility and a new sport stadium.
