New WindanSea clubhouse to benefit Caloundra community

The Caloundra-based clubhouse WindanSea Surf Club has opened their much-anticipated community clubhouse which is expected to benefit the whole community including the Caloundra Mal Club, Moffateers, Indigenous Surfing, Disabled Surfing and other local clubs, including the two neighbouring schools which can also access the facility to develop strong community bonds.

The new clubhouse also affords a range of community groups the opportunity to meet and expand while there will also be opportunities for small operators to run low-impact classes like yoga and Pilates and other community activities.

The 178metre2 clubhouse was constructed with funding from a range of sources including Federal, State and Local Government grants, community grants, club fundraising and pledges for building materials and labour from local businesses.

Club President Terry Landsberg said he was thrilled that a journey which commenced ten years ago and resulted in protracted legal arguments is now open for the whole community to enjoy.

Landsberg enthused “this is a great moment for our club and our members, this year we hosted our 49th Ma and Pa Bendall surfing competition so it’s going to be great to have our clubhouse open for people to enjoy while they watch some of the best local, national and even international surfers compete for our 50th event next year.

“As a club, we’ve never had a space where our members and other community groups can meet to enjoy their passion for surfing as well as other community and environmental pursuits.”

Club Chairman Don Smith said community clubhouse would be a terrific boost for local youth, club members and the wider public who now have a base where they can pursue their passion for surfing and other community pursuits.

Smith shared “over 50% of the club’s membership is juniors with women and girls representing a growing 20% of total membership. A further 30% are males aged over 18 so we have a strong young membership base.”.

WindanSea Surf Club was founded in 1970. The Club has around 145 members of all ages and abilities and has successfully run the annual Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest for the past 49 years. Former World Champion Joel Parkinson and long-term world surfing professionals Serena Brooke, Wade Goodall and Reef Heazelwood are all current or past club members.

The Caloundra-based WindanSea community clubhouse is located at Anne Street in Ballinger Park.
