New ways to discover WA's national parks

Hikers can now download some of the Western Australia's most popular trail maps to their iPhones, thanks to a partnership between the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) and EveryTrail website.

Western Australian Environment Minister Bill Marmion said the new technology was part of an ongoing strategy to make information about Western Australian national parks more easily accessible to the public.

Minister Marmion explained "the website's 'e-guides' will revolutionise the way people plan their journeys through WA, as they can be quickly downloaded to smart phones, including iPhones, before they embark on a trip.

"Once downloaded, users can view detailed maps, photos, descriptions and points of interest, even in remote areas of the State where phone reception is unavailable.

"Initially, there are six 'e-guides' that can be downloaded from the EveryTrail site for free. As more guides are added, it is anticipated that it will become an increasingly important reference for the public, as well as visitor centres."

Minister Marmion said a new online booking system was also being trialled by DEC to allow visitors to secure camping accommodation in national parks from anywhere in the world.

The DEC Campgrounds website also provides information on more than 110 campsites throughout the State.

Minister Marmion added "DEC-managed lands and waters include 98 national parks, 10 marine parks and 11 regional parks.

"In 2009/10, these lands attracted more than 14.6 million visits and this State Government is committed to encouraging discovery and enjoyment of these natural wonders.

"There is an increasing demand from travellers for access to digital information. Online tools can help people to plan their visits in advance and secure camping accommodation."
