New Waterborne Inflatables Standard released
Standards Australia has released details of the recently published Australian Standard for waterborne inflatables
Released earlier this month, AS 3533.4.5:2017, Amusement rides and devices, Part 4.5: Specific requirements - Waterborne inflatables, was originally published as an interim standard in 2012, before expiring in 2014.
However, following industry demand, the interim standard was revived, developed by Standards Australia committee ME-051, Amusement Rides and Devices and, following industry consultation, is now confirmed as an Australian Standard following industry consultation.
Used in swimming pools, open water environments, amusement parks and waterpark rides, the standard provides guidance to manufacturers and operators of constant airflow waterborne inflatable equipment and facilities on how to design and operate this type of device.
Before the interim standard, no standard existed specifically for waterborne inflatable devices in Australia with designers and operators instead referring more generally to parts of AS 3533 covering the construction, operation and maintenance of all amusement rides and devices.
The next edition of this Standard is intended to also include sealed inflatable devices, but not aquatic toys.
Anthea Hammon, Chair of the committee ME-051, Amusement Rides and Devices,
Explaining the need for AS 3533.4.5 within the industry, Anthea Hammon, Chair of the committee ME-051, Amusement Rides and Devices, stated “amusement rides are meant to be a fun and entertaining experience for all.
“Our intention is that at the end of the day amusement parks are safer for everyone’s enjoyment.”
