Commonwealth Games to boost the Gold Coast tourism experience

The Queensland Government believes that Gold Coast tourism will go from strength to strength in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Speaking to more than 200 accommodation providers on the Gold Coast last week, Queensland Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Kate Jones said the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games are an opportunity to showcase the very best of Gold Coast tourism.

Minister Jones stated “with less than three years to go until the Games, 16,000 beds have already been contracted for this major event.

“The Games will turn the international spotlight onto the Gold Coast so it’s important every player in our tourism industry is given the support they need to shine.

“The Embracing 2018 Gold Coast Quality Service Project will help tourism operators provide even better service for visitors.

“The Queensland Tourism Industry Council will work with accommodation providers, retail, restaurants, taxis and tourist attractions to help ensure we present the best we can for our visitors.”

Minister Jones advised that 180 tourism operators had already attended information sessions to find out what opportunities were available to them to enhance their service in the lead up to GC2018.

She added “tourism in Queensland contributes $23 billion in expenditure to the economy and employs 241,000 people and we want to see this industry go from strength to strength.

“Our service providers are the face of our tourism industry and any way we can help build their capacity and capability will bring dividends to Queensland.

“We want visitors to experience the best of what the Gold Coast has to offer and receive the kind of quality experience that keeps them coming back.”

Minister Jones also advised that the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) was well on the way to meeting accommodation demand that required everything from five-star hotels to budget accommodation.
