New Ulladulla Recreation Centre Opens
The first stage of Ulladulla's Dunn Lewis Memorial Complex has opened.
The facility, which includes a 12-lane bowling alley, conference room, lounge area, youth service rooms and snack bar, has been developed in memory of Craig Dunn and Danny Lewis who were killed in the 2002 Bali bombings.
The development of the Complex has been driven by Craig Dunnâs mother Gayle as a memorial for her son and his friend, both of Ulladulla.
The $6 million project has received an enormous amount support from the local community and early last year secured a $4 million grant from the Federal Governmentâs $800 million Community Infrastructure Program, enabling the first stage to be completed.
Other stages of the project will include an auditorium for sporting, community and entertainment events; gymnastics facilities; a community theatre; a commercial kitchen and additional meeting and conference rooms.
Future funding of the Complex has been affected by the Federal election, the Coalition having promised $2 million for the next stage of the Complex.
In the weeks since its opening business and social bowling leagues have been introduced and the centre has already hosted events as part of the Shoalhaven region's Escape ARTfest. As for other use, Gayle Dunn is keen to hear to from other people in the community how the facility can be best put to use, stating "we want to make sure there is always something here."
Around 25 people have already been employed at the centre with Calvin Hackett appointed manager.
