New QBE Stadium sportsfield enhances ability to host community events

The upgrade of QBE Stadium’s outer oval with a new hybrid turf surface has boosted the Auckland venue’s ability to host high-performance and community sports activity throughout the year.

Previously, the outer oval could support 630 hours of sports activity a year. Now, the new facilities can support more than 2,500 hours of training and high-performance activity.

Albany Ward Councillor Wayne Walker says the new facilities will be a major boost for rugby, football and AFL, and will free up time for community sport competitions.

Councillor Walker explained “these upgrades are timely, given the growing demand for sports facilities on the North Shore.”

Fellow Albany Ward Councillor John Watson adds “sports fields are always in demand. The installation of hybrid turf means fields at the stadium will be more available for day and night-time use.”

The $2.5 million project has included earthworks, installation of the hybrid turf and LED floodlights and the development of a new groundskeepers’ compound.

The work is part of Regional Facilities Auckland’s Venue Development Strategy, which is intended to transform Auckland’s network of stadiums.
