New era for Adelaide's AAMI Stadium site
Having hosted its last Australian rules grand final on 6th October, land use changes required for the redevelopment of Adelaide's AAMI Stadium precinct have been approved.
With future AFL matches in Adelaide to be staged at the redeveloped Adelaide Oval from the 2014 season, AAMI Stadium/Football Park will be redeveloped as a community football field surrounded by a mix of parkland and residential and retail buildings.
Explaining the redevelopment, South Australian Minister for Planning John Rau said the West Lakes (AAMI Stadium Precinct) Development Plan Amendment (DPA) supports a vibrant mixed-use development for the western suburbs.
Minister Rau stated "this site presents a good opportunity for a range of housing options that are close to services, public transport and open space.
"The site is adjacent to the West Lakes Shopping complex, has significant bus transit infrastructure already in place and is located only 15km from the Adelaide CBD.
"Further, the Transport Plan released last month by the State Government includes a PortLINK tram service to this precinct in the short to medium term.
"I have met with concerned residents about these changes and whilst I do not expect everyone to be happy, there have been considerable amendments to the draft DPA.
Changes to the DPA since the draft was released include:
• Maximum building heights have been reduced to eight storeys (from up to 15),
• Introduction of the adjacent Residential Zone - West Lakes General Policy Area 18 for a section of land adjoining West Lakes Boulevard,
• Retention of a portion of the Special Uses Zone adjoining the Grange Golf Club,
• Relocation of open space next to West Lakes Boulevard and promotion for active sporting activities,
• Recognition of the existing AAMI oval as a sports facility.
Minister Rau added "the revised building heights provide for a more tailored development and responds directly to concerns raised by community members at West Lakes."
