Adelaide Oval Redevelopment hangs on World Cup bid

Federal Government funding for the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval would appear to be dependent on Australian success in its bid to host the FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to the ABC last week, Federal Sports Minister Kate Ellis said that the Federal Government would deliver substantial support for the overhaul if Australia won the World Cup but refused to guarantee funding if the World Cup bid fails.

The South Australian Government has committed $450 million for the redevelopment with State Treasurer Kevin Foley saying that "the Federal Government has indicated to the Government that they will provide $100 million for (the redevelopment of) Adelaide Oval," adding "what they have also said is, however, if Australia is successful for the World Cup we will get substantically larger than $100 million, which will enable us to build an outstanding stadium."

Meanwhile the State Opposition has stepped up the attack on the South Australian Government over the proposal in the wake of continuing uncertainty about the financing of the project with Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond again calling for a new Adelaide Stadium to be built on the city's railyards.

Meanwhile Football Federation Australia has revealed that the $2.48 billion to be spent on stadiums and infrastructure if it is awarded the right to host the FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022 "will come from funding from all levels of Government."
