New citizens to pledge their commitment at the Adelaide Oval
With round 18 of the AFL Premiership this weekend designated as the AFL Multicultural Round, a new initiative at the Adelaide Oval will see a Citizenship Ceremony involving 25 new Australian citizens.
The ceremony will be held before the game between Port Adelaide Football Club and the Melbourne Demons on Sunday 20th July.
The initiative brings together the Australia Day Council of South Australia and is being held in conjunction with Port Adelaide Football Club and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
Australia Day Council of South Australia Executive Officer Matt Miles said the opportunity for the new citizens to take part in Multicultural Round was a unique and exciting one, stating “we have families from a number of different countries taking part including Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Brazil and the United Kingdom and they are very excited about pledging their commitment to the nation at the Adelaide Oval as it will be a distinctly Australian experience”
Suzanna Peixoto, originally from Brazil will be one of the candidates along with her husband Felipe and two of their children Mariana (aged 17) and Joao (aged 15) who have been residents in Australia for over four years.
Peixoto explained “this is a very important milestone for us, Australians have been very welcoming to us from the beginning and we feel honoured to participate in the very first citizenship ceremony at the new Adelaide Oval.
“We are looking forward to starting this new chapter of our journey here as citizens and are grateful for the opportunities Australia has given us.”
The Presiding Officer for the Ceremony will be the Lord Mayor of Adelaide Stephen Yarwood with the Governor Designate Hieu Van Le also taking an official role. All candidates and their families after the Ceremony will be guests of Port Adelaide Football Club with tickets provided to the match after the Ceremony.
