New adventure tours to explore rugged Ras Al Khaimah mountain range
A series of adventure tourism experiences are set to launch in Ras Al Khaimah, with a three-course Via Ferrata spanning the rocky facades of Jebel Jais, the Emirate’s highest peak.
The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) has advised that the Arabian Gulf’s first commercial via ferrata (iron path) will operate in the rugged Al Hajar mountain range where the average climate is 10 degrees Celsius below mean Gulf temperatures.
A via ferrata is a protected climbing route, consisting of a steel cable which runs along the mountain route and is periodically fixed to the rock, allowing climbers to secure themselves to the cable, limiting any fall.
The 470 metre-long Via Ferrata offers three individual start and finish points, as well as three zip-lines measuring 50 metres, 60 metres and 985 feet to expand possibilities for various age and fitness capabilities.
Introducing the experiences, RAKTDA Chief Executive Haitham Mattar stated “the world-class Via Ferrata is the first in a range of mountain, activity and adventure products we are developing specifically for nature and adventure seekers.
“Already on the drawing board is the world’s longest zip-line and adventure park, which we are planning to launch in Q4 2017.
“We believe the Via Ferrata and our planned adventure tourism products will have strong appeal with both the domestic and overseas activity tourism and sports market and we are currently engaging source market trade partners who want to join hands with us in developing a niche sector which leverages Ras Al Khaimah’s spectacular mountain terrain resources.”
